My work explores memory and the emotions tied to them. I create nostalgic collaged memories within my The Sacred: Weight of What Remains collection.

Generational inheritance, and the exploration of stories carried through ordinary objects and family archives is a weight I have felt for years but have been unable to express. The Sacred: Weight of What Remains collection is a way for me to process my emotions connected with loss and inheritance while celebrating my foremothers through letters, photos and ephemera that I associate with them. Working primarily with collage and assemblage, I combine photographs, letters, documents, thread, and found materials to examine the ways personal histories are preserved, fragmented, and passed from one generation to the next.

The process of creating art for this collection and sharing it with the public has allowed me to connect with the community in ways I never imagined. Like most burdens, this one isolates but by sharing my memories and the weight associated with them in this way, the memories transform from something weighty back into joy and hope.

I feel called to share my origin story and the skills I have learned from these women, making this a shared experience of knowledge as it is passed down from one generation to the next. By bringing these images and stories into public view, the weight is lifted from my shoulders and offered to the community, where memory can be held collectively rather than privately. In this way, these women are remembered and honored for future generations.
